Be Broke, Not Poor!
When I decided to start my financial journey, one of the first books that I read was “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki. One of the biggest takeaways that I took from the book was that saying “I am poor” is different from saying “I am broke”. Broke is temporary, while Poor is a mindset. HONESTLY, this blew my mind! So simple, yet so true! Saying the words “I can’t do that, I’m too poor” or “We can’t afford that, we are poor”, can easily slip out of our mouth without really thinking about it, even jokingly. Without really realizing the consequences of this. When we say the words “I am poor”, we are living in a state of lack. We want more, but we don’t know how to achieve it. We want more but we don’t really believe we deserve more. We always find excuses as to why we don’t have enough and how all of the odds are stacked against us.
On the other hand, being broke is in fact temporary. When you are broke, you know that at that precise moment you don’t have enough money to do everything you’d like. However, you know that will not always be the case. You know you deserve more in life and you're willing to work hard and be dedicated enough to achieve the success in your life. You might be broke, but you live in a state of abundance. You can see the beauty of life, the joys it can bring, and the potential you can unleash. Therefore, you do not have a poor mindset.
I can say from my personal experience, that for quite a while I was living with a poor mindset. Sad thing is, I didn’t even realize this. I lived in a constant state of impoverishment. Always finding excuses as to why my husband and I didn’t have enough money. Even though I never said it aloud, I think a part of me didn’t really believe I deserved more, even though I wanted more. But when I read this, I thought YES, I just want to be BROKE, not POOR! So I began to shift my mentality and honestly it felt as if everything around me had changed. But it wasn’t that, because in reality nothing had really changed. I was just looking at life through different lenses. I felt more empowered to face our debt head on and find solutions. I believed that we could save money because we had never done so before. So, I encourage you to tweak your wording just a bit, because words have power, and oftentimes we attract more into our lives what we constantly think about and feel. So remember, BE BROKE and NOT POOR!! Because broke will not last forever, you will find a way out! There is hope for all of us, we just need to find our way!
